Tourist Destinations
 Lombok has several temples and ruins which make the earlier Balinese domination and influence on this island very apparent. The moment this comment is made, Narmada Taman Temple Complex, Lombok springs to mind. Lombok is the home to a numerous tourist sites and it could be said that the Pura Agung Narmada, Mataram, situated opposite the Narmada market is a popular destination of this island. It is a famous temple situated near the Narmada Park on a hilly terrain.
Taman Narmada, 11 kilometers east of Mataram, was built in 1727 by King Anak Agung Gede Ngurah Karang Asem as both pleasure garden and place to worship Shiva. Its big pool is said to represent Segara Anakan, the crater lake on the volcano Rinjani, where they used to make offerings by throwing valuables into the water. As the king became too old to make the pilgrimage up the 3,726 meter high mountain, he had Narmada constructed to represent the mountains and the lake. Near the pond is a place of worship and a spring whose water is believed to give dedicated pilgrims eternal youth. |

 The best-known place on the south coast is Lombok's Kuta Beach (Sometime spelt Kute Beach), a magnificent stretch of white sand and blue sea with rugged hills rising around it, but not much else. It very small development with far fewer tourist than in famous kuta beach on Bali, but there are big plans to develop a whole stretch of the superb south coast with luxury hotels. Not to be confused with its namesake in Bali, Kuta is an area of wind swept beaches and large rock outcrops that combine for awe inspiring beauty. Kuta and south Lombok is well known by surfers and as such has several melati & losmen (homestay) style accommodations. However that said, one of the Lombok's premier hotels, the Novotel Coralia, can be found here.
Kuta, Lombok is famous for the incredibly beautiful beach. When the tide is low the bay turn into shallow water pool and the color of the water turns into turquoise. You can see the photo of the beach at the many internet cafes in Indonesia. Look for the wall paper on the computer screen. S coast of Lombok is also famous for the high waves. Also Kuta is a good base for the surfers. |

 Mount Rinjani forms the second highest volcanic peak in Indonesia, part of the celebrate "Ring of Fire". The dramatic landscape has been created over millions of the years of cone-building, violent explosions, and erosion. Forest slopes rising directly from the Sea create their own weather pattern and act as water-collectors for the whole of Lombok .
Mount Rinjani towers to a height of 3, 762m. More or less in the centre of the Reserve is the big crater lake of Segara Anak, a dizzy 200 meter descent from Plawangan on the crater rim. In the lake a new cone, Gunung Baru, has risen and is still active and spews out smoke and ash. The last known eruptions were in 1884 and 1901.
Rinjani National Park lies within the major transition zone (Wallace) where the flora and fauna of South East Asia make dramatic transition into that which is typical of Australasia. The park has rich variety plants and animal, although they can be hard to spot due to the terrain and rain forest. |

 Senggigi, north of Bangsal, belongs to the most scenic and most popular beaches on the island of Lombok with good accommodation facilities. Coral gardens grow in the sea just off shore. Senggigi Lombok maybe equivalent to Bali's Kuta Beach, but is in many ways totally different. It's far more quiet and peaceful, the nightlife here is also much more limited. The place is located north of Mataram and not far from the airport, many tourists prefer to stay here the first days before they explore the rest of the island, but you can also use Senggigi as your permanent base. Senggigi is clearly the most developed tourist area on Lombok, but stretches over a wide area and is still not overdeveloped.
There are some large, expensive hotels here, but you can also find accommodation of a more simple standard. The number of restaurants have increased in the last few years, but there is still some time before Lombok can compete with Bali. It is recommended to enjoy the sunset from a restaurant by the beach, the nightlife is not as varied as on Bali, but there are some pubs and nightclubs with live music. |
