[lomboktimes.com]After Success with Bali International Triathlon, now Triathlon come in Lombok. The first Lombok Triathlon has been scheduled for Sunday 28th October one of the toughest courses expected of a triathlon in Asia. The venue will be Sheraton Senggigi Resort, 15 minutes from the capital of Mataram.
The Race The triathlon is a long distance race consisting of a 1.8km swim, a 55km Bike ride finishing with a 12km run. It will begin at 7 a.m. on Sunday 28th October, on the beach in Senggigi, with the first finisher expected by around 10 a.m. and the last to come in on their knees around 1p.m. If you are still standing, the awards dinner will be held the same day at 6p.m.
The Course There are very few roads on this pristine, untouched island. The road chosen for the 55km cycle represents one of the toughest bike courses in South East Asia. It is incredibly hilly (steeper than Phuket) with lots of rapid, sharp climbs through the lush green Monkey Forest and features breath-taking views over the Indian Ocean. Together with a 1.8km swim and a fast 12km run, the Lombok International Triathlon will be sure to challenge even the most hard-core triathletes.
1.8km Swim The protected bay of Senggigi Beach will ensure a calm sea for the 1800m Swim consisting of 2 laps of 900m. The water is clear and at pleasant temperatures that do not require a wetsuit. Be kind to your fellow competitors at the start and turns of the swim course. Enjoy the gentle start of the race, as the rest of it will make enough waves. 55km Cycle The bike course has all elements of a great bike ride. You will start off with 20km of beautiful coastal road with lots of sharp climbs and stunning sea views (which you may or may not appreciate at that point), followed by a few kilometres of respite before you begin the 5km ascent of Mount/Gunung Pusuk through the lush green Monkey Forest. Depending on your form and speed you will either be cheered or jeered at by the monkeys, that are expected to come and watch the race in great numbers. Most likely, to everyone's relief the climbing frenzy stops after Gunung Pusuk and you can finally get onto your aerobars and hammer (if you still have enough spark) the final 15km of flat roads through the towns of Gunungsari and Meningin before you hit the run. Drink stations at the 23km point (Pemenang Town) and at the 43km point (Gunungsari Town) will provide you with water and isotonic drinks in drink bottles. Note: there will be cut-off times on the bike course to ensure that only real triathletes make it to the finish line. 12km Run The 12km run is being finalised and will likely include more stunning sea views. Yes, this means more climbing and for the spectators' enjoyment you will be made to do two laps of it. At this stage of the race walking, staggering and crawling is allowed! If you do make it to the finish line, you will be assured of a hero's welcome. If you are not just superfit, but also smart (already in question for the fact that you are taking part) you will make full use of the many drink stations with isotonic drinks, water and sponges that will cover the run course. Prepare to weep, so hydrate well! Participant Categories All participants must be 15 years or over for the whole long distnce course. The categories are the following for either men or women groups under 30, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49 and 50 plus. Open relays can also be an option, made of 2 or 3 people. Lombok Island Located off Bali, Indonesia, Lombok is a small, undeveloped island with quiet, pristine beaches and a lush, varied landscape. Distinctively, Lombok is a very friendly place and the people make you feel warmly welcome. Life moves at a much slower pace than Bali or Phuket or other 'holiday destinations', and you are assured of a peaceful, relaxing break after the race. How to Get There Lombok is easily accessible, with direct flights to the island from Singapore on Silk Air or via Bali by boat or plane (3 flights daily). Bike Travel Travelling with your bike to the Lombok International Triathlon needn't be a stressful matter as it is very easy to fly with your bike as luggage. Most airlines are used to people travelling with a bicycle and if your bike is boxed correctly, it makes for a relatively hassle free experience. Boxing your bicycle correctly is one of the most important aspects when travelling with your bike to an event. Although expensive and heavy, a dedicated hard case bicycle box (such as those by TC1, SciCon and Elite) virtually guarantees that your bike will arrive in one piece at your destination. However, for those who are budget conscious, there are other more cost effective options, which can almost offer as much protection as a hard case if packed correctly. Outlined below are the advantages and disadvantages to the different products available on the market today: Hard Case Bike Box Pros: ultimate in protection, v ery easy to pack, secure, additional space for kit, ideal for those who travel regularly with bikes. Cons; heavy (14.5kg for example), bulky, expensive, large storage space needed at home. Bike Bag Pros; lightweight, cheap, tear resistant, padded Protection, big enough to store extra kit, many bags have additional compartments, easy to store at home, ideal for the occasional traveler. Cons; does not protect your bike from big impacts, lots of preparation protecting your bike is required, some bags are not waterproof Cardboard Bike Box Pros; very cheap (or free), easily available, once used, throw away (recycle please), ideal for the one time traveler. Cons; little protection, not waterproof, flimsy, difficult to pack. Registration
