Solo, formerly known as Surakarta is famous as the center of Javanese culture and tradition. It is bordered by the longest river in Java, Bengawan Solo River. It is located approximately 65 kilometres northeast of Yogyakarta, about 100 kilometres southeast of Semarang and it is flanked by mountain volcanoes Merapi and Merbabu in the north. Solo, with its charming and soft-spoken people has several amazing sites to see. The city is home to many heritage and cultural sites. For instances,the visitors can find the remains of royal palaces and other imperial constructions, Hindu temples, museums and centres of art and culture. Kasunanan Palace

Kasunanan Palace or Karaton Surakarta Hadingingrat was built in 1745 by King Pakubuwono II. The visitors can find many historic exhibitions exposed at the palace when they visit this magnificent palace. For instances, there is a tower called Panggung Sanggabuwana. It is located in the yard of the palace.

According to the legend, it was a meeting place for the king and the queen of the south, Nyai Roro Kidul, a legendary fairy in javanese mistical myth who is a ruler of the sea south sea. Inside the palace, the visitors also can find a museum with exciting heirlooms of the kingdom, ancient weapons, keris, which is Javanese traditional weapons, also athers antique matters.
 

Puro Mangkunegaran

Mangkunegaran Palace or Puro Mangkunegaran is a very beautiful and well maintained palace. The palace is located in the heart of Solo. It was built by R.M. Said (king Mangkunegoro I) between 1740-1757. Several history objects which can be found here are believed to be from the Majapahit (1293 - 1478) and Mataram (1586 - 1755) empire eras. The visitor here can see a traditional joglo architecture and many kind historical and antique goods such as wayang orang costumes, leather and wooden puppets, dance masks, jewelry pieces, religious icons, wood carving or old fashion gamelan.

Pasar Klewer

Klewer Market or Pasar Klewer is one of preserved traditional market in Solo. It was built in 1971 with its main purpose is to provide batik craftsmen and industry a place to sell their products. It is located on the downtown within a walking distance from Sunan's Palace. It is regarded as the pioneer of batik and garment trading place and known as the biggest textile market in the city. The visitors must be prepared to bargain in order to achieve the best price when they want to buy the products here. Almost all products are free to bargain. Klewer Market is a one stop batik shopping center. It is a great place to buy machine printed batik, hand printed, and handmade batik, with wide options of motif and style.The visitors also can find plenty of tailors in the market who makes dozens of shirts and skirts just in one day. Some traditional food also provided here, for examples : Intip, Serabi, Brem Solo, etc.

Pasar Triwindu

Pasar Triwindu or Triwindu market is a flea market which is located approximately 150 meters to the south of Mangkunegaran Palace. It is a place which provides people who want to look for souvenirs, unused commodities or antiques things with relatively cheaper price. For instances, old batik stamps made of brass, European, Javanese and Chinese furnitures, paintings, old bottles and old musical instruments, coins, statues made of bronze or curved of stone, a wide range of porcelain and ceramic wares, toys, dinner sets and flower pots, etc. All of the items mentioned are negotiable prices and a good bargain will make the visitors get the items that they want on cheap.

Pasar Gede

Located in what is known as the Chinese quarter of Solo, Pasar Gede is a vast market selling fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, household items and the ilk. This is a lively market and well patronised by not only the locals but also those from out of town who come here daily for shopping. Another great market to wander around but do yourself a favour and get there early in the morning because as the day’s heat increases, so does the interior of the market.
