The island of Lombok in Indonesia is welll known for its handicrafts and traditional craftwork, in particular pottery, basket-making, and weaving. The three villages of Banyumulek, Masbagik Timur, and Penujak represent the islands major pottery producing areas. Here, where pottery making is their main source of income, the village women have been producing pottery since the decline of the East Javanese Hindu Kingdom of Majapahit in the early part of the 16th century. Even today, the women potters of these three villages pass down their unique skills from mother to daughter in a tradition called "turun temurun".
Since 1988, the Lombok Crafts Project has been assisting the women potters of Banyumulek, Masbagik Timur, and Penujak, to improve their standard of living through technical and marketing assistance. This bilateral development project between the Governments of the Republic of Indonesia and New Zealand is supported by the Indonesian Department of Industry. In each of the three villages, the Project has funded the building of work shelters and showrooms. Technical, quality and design skills have been improved through input by New Zealand advisers, together with administrative, marketing, financial and logistic training. |

Lombok is a pearl in the sparkling blue ocean and a haven for those seeking the unspoiled beauty of the Bali of old. Indeed many people refer to Lombok as Bali 20 years ago, how ever this is incorrect when you consider the landscapes and cultures which are uniquely Lombok. As the old saying goes, "You can see Bali in Lombok, but you can't see Lombok in Bali".
Lombok and Sumbawa's seashore are potential and pollution-free for Oyster Farm. Many Japanese investors are involved in developing sea pearls and black pearls. Sekotong, East Lombok, and North West of Lombok are the places where most sea pearls comes from. |

Idul Fitri
In Indonesia the feast is named Hari Raya Idul Fitri or informally, Lebaran. Hari Raya literally means The Great Day of (Celebration) . Sometimes, there are different statements on when the day falls, especially between Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama, because people use different techniques to determine it. Almost all of the people follow the government of Indonesia's statement and such differences do not get in the way of people celebrating. This event is recognized as a national holiday, starts a few days before Idul Fitri, and lasts until days after it. Schools also have different schedules for the holiday as many Islamic schools usually make it a longer holiday.
Muslims in Indonesia usually ask forgiveness from their relatives and friends after the special prayer. Another interesting Eid ul-Fitr tradition in Indonesia is mudik that usually applies to urbanites who came to Jakarta from the other provinces of Java or other islands in Indonesia. Before Eid ul-Fitr comes, people will go back to their hometowns where their relatives, sometimes including their parents, reside. This event often causes crowding in airports, seaports, and bus stations while some who are traveling by car are trapped in the traffic jam for hours. For little children, asking for money as well as forgiveness from relatives is common to motivate them. Many, especially in the cities, also use the term angpau for the money just like Chinese people do. |
